Peter Carl Culos, Jr., age 95 of Red Bank, NJ passed away on December 27, 2023. Peter was born on February 8, 1928 and lived his early years in New York city until moving to, what was then, the suburb of Linden, NJ. At Linden High School, Peter excelled at football and helped lead the Linden Tigers to 2 state championships in 1945 and 1946. He went on to play college football at Chattanooga University. Peter had to leave college before he completed his degree when his father, Peter Culos Sr., became sick. Peter had to take over the running of his father’s business, Linden Tile Company, while his father recovered.

Gerda Lembcke Overgaard 89, of Red Bank, NJ passed peacefully December 26^th, 2023. She was born to Karen and Jens Lauridsen January 10, 1934 in Randers, Denmark. She spent her childhood living under German occupation in Jutland. An ardent student with a competitive streak, she graduated at the top of her class from the Randers Realskole and the Holstebro Handelsskole.

Gerda emigrated with her husband Ole Overgaard to the United States in 1968 and settled in Rumson for many wonderful years. She was always hospitable and kind and opened her home to many travelers and other souls in need. Their little ranch in Rumson was often referred to as “Hotel Denmark.” Gerda had a love of travel, art, fashion, and cooking. Eager to share her Danish cuisine and customs, friends and family would fill her home on Christmas Eve, eating aebleskiver, drinking juleglog, dancing around the tree, and generating maximum hygge. She was always dressed elegantly with matching jewelry and cheetah print was her favorite neutral. Her small stature belied an enormous strength of character. She met all her life’s challenges with grace and cheerfulness.

Joseph John Sergewich, born February 28, 1922 in Union Beach, NJ to John and Stella Sergewich, passed on Christmas Day at the age of 101. He was one of the last surviving veterans of WWII. As a member of the 77^th infantry, he crossed the Pacific, fighting in major battles on Guam, the Philippine islands and Okinawa. He received the Bronze Star Medal and many campaign ribbons for his bravery, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Returning to Shrewsbury, NJ after the war he married Etta nee Etta Thorne. He also got his first and only job at New Jersey Bell Telephone Company earning $25 a week. He retired in 1983 after 37 years of service advancing to Supervisor of the linemen.

Nancy E. Bruno, formerly of Hazlet and Little Silver, NJ passed quietly in her sleep early Christmas morning, December 25th.

Nancy was born on 6/23/1934 and was a graduate of Hasbrouck Heights HS in North Jersey. Nancy eventually moved to Hazlet and then Little Silver to raise her four children. Nancy was employed at General Cable as a customer service representative and retired in 1992. Nancy is predeceased by her ex husband John VanVelthoven and husband Pat Bruno who passed in 2012.

On December 22, 2023, John Francis Horan, having lived an extraordinary life of 100 years was called home to God. Born on November 1, 1923, in Jersey City, NJ John was raised by his parents John and Mae (nee Daly) Horan along with his siblings Bette, Don and Pat. He attended Snyder High School, Jersey City graduating in January 1942. He had a long career as an information technology systems analyst working for Western Electric, Pathmark, Time Inc. and Church Pension Group from which he retired.

In order to support his mother and siblings, following the death of his father, John took a job at Western Electric in Kearny NJ. John was drafted and inducted into the Army in June 1943. Following basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina, John applied and was accepted into the elite Aviation Cadet Training program. He learned to fly at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC and later was moved to the West Coast Army Air Corps Training Center in Santa Ana, California. However, John’s dream of being an Air Cadet was cut short, as ground troops were needed. In late April 1944, John received orders to report for reassignment to the infantry.

Walter D. Wilson, Sr, 90, of Lincroft, NJ, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Walt was born the youngest of seven to Lillian and Austin Wilson in Applegarth, NJ. He was a long-time resident of Fair Haven before moving to his farm in Freehold Township.

Walt proudly served in the United States Army, 10^th Mountain Division during the Korean War. He was a Free Mason.

Walt was an accomplished wood worker and built many custom-built homes in Monmouth County.

Joseph F. Cabrera of Atlantic Highlands, NJ passed away on December 20, 2023 at home with his beloved wife Katie by his side.

Joe was born June 10, 1947 in Manhattan, NY to Felicita and Angel Luis Cabrera, the fourth of six children. In addition to many youthful adventures throughout New York City, he also fondly remembered time with his family on his uncle’s dairy farm in Puerto Rico. He attended and graduated from Immaculata High School and later obtained a bachelor’s degree from Baruch College of the City University of New York. In the spring of 1980, he met the love of his life, Katie Mulheren, when they were both working at Tavern on the Green in Central Park. This past June, they were thrilled to celebrate 40 years of marriage.
