Aleida C. Arias, 89 years old, passed away on January 22, 2026 while hospitalized for influenza. She will always be remembered for being a loving daughter and sister; outstanding wife, mother and grandmother; and caring aunt and friend.

 

Aleida Caridad González Franco de Arias, de 89 años, falleció el 22 de Enero 2026 en el hospital por complicaciones relacionadas a la influenza. Siempre sera recordada por ser una buena hija y hermana, una esposa, madre y abuela ejemplar, y una tía y amiga cariñosa.

 

She was born in a humble and loving home in Agramonte, Matanzas, Cuba to her parents Domitila Franco and Guillermo Gonzalez. She loved her siblings Esteban, Gonzalo, Francisco (Chito), Jose (Cheo), Guillermo (Guillo), Regla and their families including her nieces and nephews dearly. She met the love of her life, Agustín Arias, while she was walking near her house and they bumped into each other. They started talking, and the rest is history: a five‑year engagement, 63 years of marriage, a loving home, and a daughter they adored.

 

Ella nació en un hogar humilde y lleno de amor en Agramonte, Matanzas; sus padres eran Domitila Franco y Guillermo González. Ella quería mucho a cada uno de sus hermanos Esteban, Gonzalo, Francisco (Chito), Jose (Cheo), Guillermo (Guillo), Regla y sus familias incluyendo a sus sobrinos. Conoció al amor de su vida, Agustín Arias, cuando caminaba por la acera de su casa y se tropezaron. Empezaron a conversar y lo demás es historia: un compromiso de 5 años, un matrimonio de 63 años, un hogar lleno de amor, y una hija que adoraban.

 

Aleida and her husband made the difficult decision to leave their family and life possessions in Cuba and join her brother Guillermo in New Jersey in 1984 to give their daughter the opportunity to study and become a professional. Aleida started to work as a seamstress and eventually specialized in sewing military caps (American Legion, VFW) until her retirement. She took great pride in her work and in helping her husband purchase their family home, all while supporting their daughter through college and pharmacy school. She rejoiced spending time with family, caring for her grandchild and watching her grow from a baby to a beautiful young woman. She loved calling family and friends to check on them, offering a kind word of hope, encouragement and a prayer as she was a devout Catholic. She was a talented cook and well known for her black beans, Cuban corn tamales, arroz con pollo, natilla and buñuelos. She enjoyed buying gifts for others, Facebook, Candy Crush, and Boscov’s. She cherished visiting family in Florida, as she did this last December and had a great time catching up with loved ones.

 

Aleida y su esposo tomaron la difícil decisión de dejar a su familia y todas sus pertenencias en Cuba para unirse a su hermano Guillermo en Nueva Jersey en 1984, con el deseo de darle a su hija la oportunidad de estudiar y convertirse en profesional. Aleida comenzó a trabajar como costurera y con el tiempo se especializó en confeccionar gorras militares (American Legion, VFW) hasta su jubilación. Se sentía orgullosa de su trabajo y de ayudar a su esposo a comprar su casa familiar, mientras apoyaban a su hija durante la universidad y la escuela de farmacia. Disfrutaba profundamente pasar tiempo con su familia, cuidar a su nieta y verla crecer desde bebé hasta convertirse en una hermosa joven. Le encantaba llamar a familiares y amigos para saber cómo estaban, siempre ofreciendo una palabra de esperanza, ánimo y una oración, pues era una católica devota. Era una cocinera talentosa, reconocida por sus frijoles negros, tamales de maíz cubanos, arroz con pollo, natilla y buñuelos. También disfrutaba de comprar regalos para su familia, Facebook, Candy Crush, y Boscov’s. Le encantaba visitar a la familia en Florida, como lo hizo este pasado Diciembre, cuando pasó unos días maravillosos con sus familiares.

Aleida will be remembered and missed by her husband of 63 years, Agustin Arias, their daughter, son in law and granddaughter, Sonia, Greg and Sofia Schweers, her niece and goddaughter Regla Quesada, her siblings in law, Georgina, Elva, Orlando and Irma Arias, Georgina Gonzalez; Emma Bergantiño; and many nieces and nephews in Florida and outside the US. Aleida is preceded to eternal rest by her parents, all her siblings and spouses, and her siblings in law Nereida (Neyi), Rene (Minite), Pedro, Jose and Pablo Arias, her niece Lazara and nephew Francisco (Panchito) Gonzalez. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association in honor of Aleida’s memory are appreciated. Private interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on January 30th, 2026 by Thompson Memorial Home.

 

Su recuerdo vivirá con amor en su esposo de 63 años, Agustín Arias; en su hija, yerno y nieta, Sonia, Greg and Sofía Schweers. También será recordada con profundo afecto por su sobrina y ahijada Regla Quesada; por sus cuñadas/os Georgina, Elva, Orlando e Irma Arias, Georgina Gonzalez; Emma Bergantiño; y por sus sobrinos en Florida y fuera de los Estados Unidos. Aleida fue precedida al descanso eterno por sus padres, todos sus hermanos y cónyuges, sus cuñadas/os Nereida (Neyi), René (Minite), Pedro, José y Pablo Arias, así como por su sobrinos Lázara y Francisco (Panchito) Gonzalez.

En lugar de flores, se agradecen las donaciones a la American Heart Association en honor a la memoria de Aleida. El entierro privado tendrá lugar en el Cementerio Mt. Olivet el 30 de Enero de 2026 a cargo de Thompson Memorial Home.
