Howard "Les" L. Hathaway III

Howard L. Hathaway III, better known as “Les”, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025 at his residence.  He was born in Long Branch, NJ and settled in Red Bank in 1993.

The joy of Les’ life was his beloved wife of 35 years, Judith Hathaway. Together, they traveled the world, hosted dinner parties, and spent countless hours with friends at the Monmouth Boat Club.  He was also a devoted and loving father to his son, Timothy Hathaway.

Les was a graduate of Asbury Park High School. He enjoyed a long career as manager of operations at a variety of businesses, and he was employed most recently at PlanetConnect.  He was also an accomplished sailor, having competed in the Newport to Bermuda Race and many Lightning North American Championships.

His interest in sailing began when he crewed with his father in a Wood Pussy at the age of 13 at the Monmouth Boat Club.  He was a lifetime member and he formed his most enduring friendships there. He was regularly involved as race committee, helping new members, and with social events. He was also an active member of US Sailing, New Jersey Yacht Racing Association, and Navesink Maritime Heritage Association.

Les is predeceased by his wife, Judith Hathaway, and his parents, Howard and Grace Hathaway.  He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Elizabeth Hathaway; his granddaughter, Gemma; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Margaret Hathaway; his sister Deborah Hathaway Hunter; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 24th at the Monmouth Boat Club, 31 Union St., Red Bank, NJ 07701. Drinks will be served on the second floor beginning at 5:00 with buffet dinner to follow.  The celebration will end at sunset (8:14 pm) when the flags will be retired with a cannon blast.

Those who wish are respectfully encouraged to make a donation in his name to Lunch Break (donate online or mail to: PO Box 2215 Red Bank, NJ 07701) or Monmouth Boat Club to keep it in good repair for future sailors (mail to PO Box 777 Red Bank, NJ 07701).
