Francis (Fran) Gorey, beloved father, grandfather and great–grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2020, two months short of his 98th birthday. He was at home in Shrewsbury, NJ under the loving care of his son and daughter-in-law. Born on June 18, 1922 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, he grew up in Edwardsville PA. He also lived in CT and CA before settling in Montville, NJ, where he raised three children with his wife of 64 years, Renee.
Fran had a lifelong love of music, tap dancing as a young boy and taking up the trumpet at an early age. He went on to play trumpet professionally with the Johnny Menko Orchestra, performing live on stage and on a weekly radio show for several years. He had the opportunity to join a big band at the height of that era but by then had met and married the love of his life, Renee Boulay, and he wasn’t willing to leave her behind to perform on the road. He continued to play the trumpet throughout his life, including in the choir at St. Pius X Church in Montville and with the Presbyaires choral group that entertained at nursing homes. He especially enjoyed playing “Happy Birthday” for family and friends on their special days, including his jazzed-up trumpet version.
Another love of his was automobiles. He could tell you the year, make and model of most any car the moment it came into view. This love of cars eventually led to a career selling them. He started selling Chevys in 1964 and eventually retired from Vey Cadillac in Rockaway, NJ in 1988. He often said his job never felt like work because he loved what he did.
Fran will be remembered for his love of family, strong will, and independence. He lived on his own until the final six months of his life. He loved to regale people with many stories from his life, which he would describe in amazing detail. He was also a die-hard Mets fan to the end. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Mark & Jill Gorey of Gainesville FL, Christopher & Joan Gorey of Shrewsbury NJ and Lisa and Ronald Parker of Manchester NH, five grandchildren, Stacey, Jessica, Jason, Tony & Stephanie, and six great-grandchildren Leo, Harrison, Natalie, Jake, Keifer & Hayley.
Fran will be greatly missed by all of his extended family and all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
