Obituaries

Robert E. Sullivan, Age 73 of Oceanport, passed away on June 15, 2016. Bob was born in 1943 in South Amboy, and is predeceased by his parents Edward and Sally (Cichalski) Sullivan. He moved to Oceanport in 1973.  Bob is survived by his wife of 46 years Maureen (Reilly) and his children Robert and Rachel, his sister Margaret MacMillan, as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in South Amboy and received a BA in Education from Kean University in 1964, a MA in Guidance and Personnel from Seton Hall University in 1967, and a BS in Business Administration from Thomas Edison State University in 1988.  He began his career in education by teaching 6th grade in Hazlet from 1964 to 1967, followed by 2 years as a guidance counselor at Rahway Junior High School. He started as a guidance counselor at East Brunswick High School in 1969 and retired 34 years later in 2003.

In 1973 Bob received a NJ Department of Education grant to establish a Career Center at East Brunswick High School and, as Career Counselor, coordinated the Career Guidance and Job Placement program until his retirement in 2003. In 1975 he wrote Career Resource Center: A Handbook for Implementation which was published and distributed by the NJ Department of Education. While working at East Brunswick High School, Bob became a Paul Harris Fellow as recognition from the South River - East Brunswick Rotary Club.

During retirement Bob served as a consultant to Middlesex County College for the New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey alternate route teacher training program in partnership with New Jersey City University.  Bob's hobbies included golf, gardening, and rooting for his Jets, Mets, and Knicks. He loved traveling with his family, spending winters in Florida as well taking trips throughout the US and Europe.  He also enjoyed the 10 years he spent coaching soccer and softball in the Oceanport Recreation Program.  In recent years, Bob became interested in amateur photography and placed third in the 2015 Monmouth County Senior Art Contest & Exhibition.

Visitation will be Monday, June 20th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad Street, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 21st at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea (Christ the King), 101 Chelsea Avenue, Long Brtanch. Entombment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery & Mausoleum in Oceanport.
